This 1980’s beach condo needed budget friendly furniture, décor & an updates. The kitchen and master bath decidedly were the areas to focus on.
The goal:
infuse the client’s transitional style with a breezy beach vibe
The plan:
- take inspiration from the breathtaking ocean view
- optimize function in a small footprint
- minimize costs & deliver the best bang for the buck
The Bathroom:
As you can see in these photos; the master bathroom is small and lacked storage. Opening the door blocked half of the tub/shower. The 7’ ceilings & light box added to the claustrophobic feeling. Changing the door to a sliding “barn door” was a must. Because the guest bath had a tub, it made sense to convert this bathroom into a walk-in shower. Since we were tearing the tub/shower down to the studs, we went ahead and added “aging in place” features such as handrails and a bench. Other shower “must do’s” add a shampoo niche and raise the shower head. Our low ceiling didn’t allow much room for shower head movement but we added as many inches as possible. The vanity was custom made to add a narrow depth linen cabinet with open storage below and much needed vanity drawers. Continuing the new flooring from the bedroom and neutralizing the wall color provided the breezy, airy feeling.
The Kitchen:
Removing the 1980’s oak and hunter green laminate couldn’t happen soon enough. The cabinets were painted white and topped with white quartz countertop. What a striking improvement!
Furniture and Remaining updates:
Removing the carpet in the bedrooms not only opened up the space but improved maintenance with the sand and water inherent at the beach. By selecting light colored furniture, we were able to maximize seating, storage and utility while keeping with our airy breezy design style.
Working on the 7th floor of a condo building comes with logistical challenges, but opening the door to that view each day was a delight. I love using nature as our featured design element. Check out the video to see the changes.
